DNA Repair Pathways

Multiple mechanisms to detect and correct DNA damage.

Overview

Cells employ several DNA repair mechanisms: Base Excision Repair (BER) for small base modifications, Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER) for bulky adducts and UV damage, Mismatch Repair (MMR) for replication errors, Homologous Recombination (HR) and Non-Homologous End Joining (NHEJ) for double-strand breaks.

Clinical Significance

Maintains genomic integrity; defects cause cancer predisposition syndromes; PARP inhibitors exploit HR deficiency in cancer therapy.
