Overview

ABC transporters use ATP hydrolysis to transport substrates against concentration gradient. 48 human genes in 7 subfamilies (ABCA-ABCG). Includes CFTR, MDR1/P-glycoprotein, ABCA1, and ABCG2/BCRP.

Cellular Location

Plasma membrane, ER, mitochondria, peroxisomes

Clinical Significance

CFTR mutations cause cystic fibrosis; MDR1 causes multidrug resistance in cancer; ABCA1 deficiency causes Tangier disease.
