Mitosis

Nuclear division producing two genetically identical daughter nuclei.

Overview

Mitosis consists of five stages: prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Cytokinesis typically follows to divide the cytoplasm. The spindle assembly checkpoint ensures all chromosomes are properly attached before anaphase.

Cellular Location

Nucleus → whole cell

Clinical Significance

Essential for growth and tissue repair; target of anti-mitotic chemotherapies (taxanes, vinca alkaloids); errors cause aneuploidy.
